Elk Creek Gelbvieh held their 15^th Annual All Black Bull Sale on March 20, 2008 at the Belle Fourche Livestock Exchange, Belle Fourche, SD. The offering included sons of ELK CK Bronco 411G, ELK Ace Ventura, ELK CK Maverick 850N, GRU ELK DEE Jake 744J, and ELK CK Crazy Horse 138P. A good crowd of buyers were on the seats and on the phone. Elk Creek had one of the largest offerings of black purebred bulls in the area which attracted lots of interest from registered breeders.

Topping the sale was Lot 42, ELK CK Iron Horse 42T. This homozygous black and homozygous polled son of Crazy Horse out of an Encore dam carried impressive EPD numbers: BW 1.5; WW 46; YW 96; MK 16; MB .02; CV 12.76; and FM 26.31. He also posted a 41 cm scrotal and a 6.6 frame. Bidding was active and Darrell and Duane Nelson, Nelson Gelbvieh, Glenwood, Alberta purchased Iron Horse for $12,750. Nelson's purchased full possession and the Canadian semen rights with Elk Creek retaining the U.S. semen rights.

Second high selling bull was Lot 20, ELK CK Good Medicine 20T, a homozygous black son of ELK CK Maverick 850N out of a Bronco dam. With a 40 cm scrotal and a 6.4 frame, his EPD's fit a lot of programs: BW 2.9; WW 53; YW 97; MK 17; MB .06; CV 18.56; and FM 26.59. Commercial producer, Grant Breitkreutz of Redwood Falls, MN paid $6,750 to own this Elk Creek bull that joins other Elk Creek sires at his commercial Red Angus operation.

Goettlich Gelbvieh of Hilger, MT paid $5,500 to own homozygous black ELK CK Chain Reaction 439T, a Crazy Horse son out of a Dusty Trail 20M (Encore) dam. Chain Reaction 439T posted an 81 lb. birth weight, an 812 lb. adj. weaning and a 1234 yearling weight. He had a 44 cm scrotal and 6.6 frame with impressive EPD's of BW 1.9; WW 51; YW 93; MK 18; MB .05; CV 10.48; and FM of 23.11.

The sale offering was 100% polled and 28 bulls were homozygous black. 100% of the offering surpassed the breed average for the Marbling EPD, while 97% surpassed the active Gelbvieh sires for the Carcass Value (CV) EPD's. Bulls sold into seven states and Canada. Volume buyer was the Bush Ranch of Pierre, SD with 6 head.
